Jackie McConkie
In January everyone at the Silver Spur Riding club regular monthly
meeting voted to dedicate this year’s Show Program to Jackie
McConkie. Jackie personally touched my heart years ago when she
taught my two girls to ride and take care of their horses. She is one
of those special people you meet and you are blessed just to know
her, because of the genuine love of people.

Jackie McConkie has been owner and instructor of the Friendship
Stables, located in Augusta, Maine, for 30 years. Friendship Stables
is named after a verse in the Bible, John 15:13-17. Jackie has
dedicated these past 30 years teaching horseback riding, and all that
goes with it, to riders ranging from young to older and able or
disabled alike. Jackie has been very fortunate to have met so many
horse loving people in her life…”What a blessed life!”
Jackie has had success beyond measure. She has had wonderful
years at Silver Spur Riding Club. Jackie has taught showing at the
beginner level and has watched many of her students to go on to
show nationally. Jackie herself had brought one of her students,
which had started showing at Silver Spur, to the American Royal in
November of 2001, where he earned the Reserve UPHA National
Exceptional Challenge Cup title.
Jackie is also very involved in the Maine Equine Special Olympics.
She has put 10 years of hard work and great fun into Special
Olympics and has helped those with development disabilities to show
and compete and have the chance, “to be just like all the rest!”
Jackie spent 25 years as a 4-H leader. The first Kennebec County 4-
H Horse Camps were at Friendship Stables. So many young
Equestrians and horse lovers prospered from Jackie’s years of
leading 4-H. One year, 5 of Jackie’s students were in the top 10 of
the Maine Team competing at Eastern States in West Springfield,
MA. This was a very proud time! Jackie is still a supporter of 4-H
today, encouraging her own granddaughters in their club that they
have recently joined.
Jackie has watched, over the years, the seeds that were planted;
grow into success of students choosing equine careers. She has
played a great role in helping and teaching many of us to pursue
such a life. As her daughter, I have watched my Mom push all of her
students not only to become a better equestrian and horse owner, but
to become the best person we can be in life. With her loving support
and constant guidance and teachings, I can truly say that Jackie
McConkie is an outstanding mentor to many people…..many….
equestrians…..And many horse owners and horse lovers!
